Critical commentary
A smaller sketch of similar foliage by Wilson D266 Study of a Plant, Private Collection, England, is inscribed verso: done at the Villa Madama, i.e. when the artist was in Rome (1751-57). Drawings from the life were useful as models for foliage in such major paintings as P127.
