Part of the Colosseum, Rome is shown at the right. By its side to the left are smaller buildings and a large tree, before which two small figures approach each other

Subject
The view is from the Meta Sudans, an ancient fountain demolished in 1936. The arcades of the Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheatre, built 72-80 AD, stand on the right. On the left, the perimeter wall of the Sinibaldi vineyard can be seen, and behind it, the ruins of the Baths of Titus dominate the Oppian Hill.
