A man is seated on a bank and another punts a boat in the foreground at the left. Beyond, on an island, a group of monks enters a church, with a leaning cross on the tower and windswept trees behind. To the left is an expanse of sea, lit by a diagonal beam of light from beyond a cloudy sky.

George Willis was an antiquarian book dealer, who occasionally published books and prints. His firm was active from 1832-1856 and sold many prints to the British Museum. In 1856 it merged with Thomas Sotheran to become Willis & Sotheran.
