Critical commentary
The drawing was one of a number in the collections of Wilson's artist-contemporaries, <span class="underline">Nathaniel Hone</span> and <span class="underline">Paul Sandby</span>, notably D243. The sale of Wilson drawings owned by <span class="underline">William Lock 'of Norbury'</span> included twelve 'Small circular Landscapes, Views in the Environs of Rome, taken in the years 1754 and 1756' (Sotheby's, 3 May 1821 (386)), though this drawing is not known to have belonged to Lock.
The drawing was one of a number in the collections of Wilson's artist-contemporaries,
