Condition/Conservation
In 1953 W.G. Constable reported the condition as rubbed, with the impasto flattened.
Kate Lowry has noted: Plain weave linen canvas. Glue-relined. Original turnovers exist partially and some of the original paint wraps around the stretcher along all edges. Possibly a commercially-prepared ground, grey in colour. Landscape underpainted with a pale pink. Paint film generally thin. It is not clear whether this is due to over cleaning or a sketchy, or perhaps unfinished, paint application. Sky is painted down to the landscape. There is slight impasto in the figures. Blobs of blue-green paint in foreground are unlike Wilson.
