Biographical Details
Sir William St Quintin of Scampston Hall, Yorkshire, became M.P. for Thirsk in 1722 and in 1724, he married Rebecca Thompson, daughter and heiress of Sir John Thompson (later Lord Mayor of London). He furthered the expansion of his estates in the East Riding and from 1748 employed Lancelot 'Capability' Brown to landscape the grounds at Scampston. His collection included several works by Thomas Gainsborough, a personal friend and near neighbour when they were staying in Bath for the season and he probably bought P70 and P82 as pendants directly from Wilson.
