Biographical Details
John Douglas was a collector from north-east Wales who acquired Wilsons between 1817 and 1824 for his gothic mansion at Gyrn, Flintshire. He became a partner in Douglas, Smalley & Co., the Holywell cotton manufacturers, beginning a period of great prosperity for the Douglas family. Following the revival in Wilson's reputation in the opening years of the 19th century, his works could be found in many of the art collections in Wales, including this one. (See An explanatory Catalogue of Pictures in the Gyrn Gallery, Manchester, 1824, and A Catalogue of the splendid and highly valuable Collection of Pictures, the Property of the late John Douglas, Esq., ... sold by Messrs T Winstanley & Sons, Liverpool, 26th & 27th August, 1840 ). Pictures by or attributed to Wilson in that sale comprised lots:
11 A View in Dovedale, Derbyshire (£15)
67 An Italian Lake Scene, with Figures (270 guineas, Thompkinson)
