Biographical Details
George Dudley Wallis was a museum curator and art teacher, who practised as a decorative artist in Manchester from 1832 to 1837, but then developed an interest in art education, as it applied to design for manufactures. In 1858 Wallis joined the South Kensington Museum, where in 1863 he was appointed senior keeper of the art collections. He worked there until just before his death in 1891. Wallis advocated state aid for art and did a great deal to promote the system of circulating works of art to provincial museums.
As a collector he owned a number of works by or attributed to Wilson, including P170 Sandpit in a Glade, Private Collection, England.
