Biographical Details
Arthur Champernowne was born in Totnes Devon, the great grandson of the collector, Arthur Harington Champernowne (1769-1819). Living at Dartington Hall, he became a major collector of prints and drawings, of which a number are now in the British Museum. Some were accepted by the British Museum before his collection was dispersed in two sales at Sotheby's, on 1 February 1911 (124 lots) and 26-27 April 1911. These included D339 Santo Stefano Rotondo, Claudian Aqueduct. A typescript family history is in the Devon Record Office. (Information kindly supplied by Richard Stephens).
