Biographical Details
Beckingham's wedding on 9 June 1729. was painted by Hogarth (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 36.111). The groom, a barrister at Lincoln's Inn in London, married Mary Cox, daughter of a lawyer and businessman, at the parish church of St. Benet, Paul's Wharf, near St. Paul's Cathedral. The bride died prematurely in 1738 and Beckingham married Mary Catherine Corbett, eventually moving to Bourne Place, later known as Bourne Park, near Canterbury, Kent, which came into his family through his second wife. The house and estate were later painted by Wilson (P73). Beckingham senior died there in 1756 and the property passed to his eponymous son (q.v.) but some time afterwards was the home of Horace Mann, nephew of the diplomat, Sir Horace Mann, who lived in Florence.
