Biographical Details
George Lambert was a painter whose work included classical compositions inspired by Gaspard Dughet, copies or adaptations of Nicolas Poussin, Claude, Salvator Rosa and the Dutch masters, topographical English landscapes and country-house views, as well as pastoral and rustic scenes. His relationship to Wilson can be seen in paintings by the latter such as P88 Syon House from Richmond Gardens - I, Neue Pinakothek, Munich, where the extent to which the house is diminished in comparison with the landscape as a whole and narratives within it, demonstrates Wilson's compositional advance on the more conventional approach of Lambert in such country-house views as View of Copped Hall in Essex, from the Park 1746, Tate London.
