Biographical Details
Francis Milner Newton was a pupil of the German artist Marcus Tuscher (1705-1751) and he also studied at the St Martin's Lane Academy, London. Newton became a professional portrait painter, but he also played an important role in the formation and organisation of art institutions. In 1753 he was involved in formulating the initial plans for a national academy of art. Later he became the first Secretary of the Royal Academy.
