Re P171: '[ ... ] a curious landscape from Wynnstay is illustrative of Wilson's odd experiments in his later years. It is perhaps a Welsh landscape, an interesting attempt at a native variation on a theme popular in Dutch painting - a patch of sunlight in a deep woodland glade. But Wilson carelessly painted it over a landscape - perhaps with Italian ruins - which he did not trouble fully to eliminate, so that Time has made an odd palimpsest of it.' (p. 227)
