More Information
Bequeathed by Richard, 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam, 1816. Contains title page, text and 51 soft-ground etchings by John Whessell, reproducing drawings from Wilson's eponymous 1752 Sketchbook [D53 - D53/81] in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (E.3586-1922). There is also a short biographical account of Wilson written by Dr Michael Marlow (c.1759-1828), President of St John's College Oxford. The volume contains mainly landscape studies of unidentified scenes, Rome, Naples and Vesuvius. When it was published in 1811 Wilson's reputation had undergone a major recovery and there was a strong interest in his drawings. It was republished in part in 1863 by William Tegg [see Tegg 1863]. Another copy is at the British Museum (1921.2.16.1-49), together with a set of plates (1863,1114.219-255). Another set is at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales (NMW A 10942-10985). From those two sets the illustrations of individual plates are taken (E60/1 - E60-44). A further copy is at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven.
