More Information
Vol. 90, no. 541, pp. 109-116. The article was evinced by the acquisition from Sir Watkin Williams Wynn at Wynnstay of Mengs's Portrait of Richard Wilson (NWP1) by National Museum Wales, Cardiff. In the words of the author, 'Hitherto, no-one has attempted to survey the Richard Wilson iconography and the present article, which is designed to fill the gap, will show that the Wynnstay portrait is a document of major importance and that there are a number of pictures (especially in public collections) posing either as portraits or self-portraits of Richard Wilson, which no more resemble the artist's face than they do his hand' (p. 109). All supposed self-portraits by Wilson are dismissed by Cooper, though he was unaware of P6, which emerged from obscurity only in 1968.
