More Information
72 pp., profusely illustrated in black and white and some colour, with an introduction by Andrew Wilton. The catalogue accompanied the eponymous exhibition organised in collaboration with the Welsh Arts Council and shown at the Mostyn Art Gallery, Llandudno (14 July - 8 September) and the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and Museum, Swansea (22 September - !7 November 1984). Turner's acknowledged debt to Wilson is mentioned (pp. 20, 24) and his watercolour Caernarfon Castle from the East, 1798 Tate, London (D01901; TB XLIV Y) compared with 'the sober accounts of Richard Wilson', especially P12 (p. 57, cat. 61). His Harlech Castle from Tygwyn Ferry, Summer's Evening, Twilight, Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, New Haven (B1977.14.76) is defended 'in the light of contemporary admiration for the generalised idealism of Richard Wilson, which this picture clearly imitates, though it takes the principle even further.' (p. 60, cat. 71). His watercolour Llyn Nantlle, with Snowdon beyond, 1799, Tate, London (D03650; TB LX a I) is compared with 'the classic treatment from Richard Wilson' in P152 and P152A (p. 65, cat. 83).
