Description
Before two massive stone archways leading into a large ancient building reminiscent of the colosseum, ancient stonework is scattered. In the left foreground a woman, perhaps a shepherdess, sitting with two small children is seen in profile, while in the centre further back stand two or three other figures, apparently in classical costume. In the distance on the left a domed ruin is discernible.

More Information
A letter dated Feb 1881 in the Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery curatorial archives records the gift by J. Deffett Francis of the drawing to 'Darling Daisy', the daughter of Lionel Brough. Brough (1836-1909) was a leading comic actor in London during the 1870s and 1880s. His younger daughter 'Daisy' (originally Margaret) died of peritonitis in 1901, aged 31.
