Critical commentary
The inscription refers to the English Coffee House, situated on the Piazza di Spagna, which served as a gathering-place for the British community in Rome. For the first part of his lengthy stay there, Wilson resided on the Piazza and apparently adopted the cafe itself as his headquarters. For a likely view from his lodgings see D279.
