L'Anconetta is a small island near Marghera, near Mestre, on which the church of Sta Maria dell'Ancoinetta was built. The church and its community were dependent on the Patriarch of Venice.

Wilson must have seen the church during his stay on Venice from October 1750 to July 1751. This painting is one of eight documented versions, of which the protype is that formerly in the collectiuon of T.W. Bacon. This version is smaller but incorporates a slightly wider panorama. It omits the landing stage and boat to the right of the island.

According to Drewatts & Bloomsbury 2017: Canvas has been relined. Evidence of old craquelure to the sky. Inspection under UV reveals evidence of retouching to the trees and the water. There are some further scattered patches to the sky. In good restored condition.
