Critical commentary
Despite the inscription Wilson had long since left Italy by 1768 and the lake depicted is Nemi, not Albano. As noted by Constable, Hastings's incorrect title no doubt led to later mistakes. From a set of four etchings, sewn into white wrappers, sold by Colnaghi & Sons and published by Hurst, Robinson & Co.; one sheet with image cut and pasted onto the front wrapper, which is inscribed in pen and ink at the top: No1 | Proofs - India | 5s' and signed below: 'J. Deffett Francis.' See also E72/1A On Hounslow Heath, E72/2A Near Rome, E72/4A Villa Emelia .
