L'Anconetta is a small island near Marghera, in the vicinity of Mestre in the Venetian Lagoon, on which stands the church of Santa Maria dell'Anconetta - a dependency of the Patriarch of Venice. Wilson must have seen the little church during his stay in Venice between October 1750 and July 1751.

Wilson must have seen the church during his stay on Venice from October 1750 to July 1751. This painting is one of eight documented versions, of which the protype is that formerly in the collection of T.W. Bacon (location unknown).
