Techniques and materials
The general style is Wilsonesque but the work is much overpainted with broad, sweeping brush-strokes. The sky is light cream and undifferentiated, apart from some blue at the left and the treatment of the clouds. It is unarticulated by any birds. There are problems with the perspective of the water and the reflections in it are vague and opaque. Black reinforcing or underdrawing is visible in the trees. Constable noted: The sketchy broad handling in the middlle distance is not characteristic of Wilson, especially in paintings of this size, but can be paralleled in smaller works. The browns and greys of the foreground and the greys and blue-greys of the middle distance resemble those in authenticated work.
Critical commentary
The buildings at the left seem as much British as Italian
