Critical commentary
A group of figures summarily indicated on the extreme left seem to be carrying something long - perhaps a tree trunk. Clements noted that the site might be near Marino as a similarly crenellated tower occurs in a gouache showing the town by Giovanni Battista Busiri which in 1968 was in the R.W. Ketton-Cramer collecftion, and which she reproduces (Fig. 48).

Only two sketchbooks by Wilson have survived - the present one (D280-D280/33) and D53-D53/81 Studies and Designs by R. Wilson done in Rome in the Year MDCCLII, Victoria & Albert Museum, London (E.3586-1922).
