A view from the mainland across the Venetian lagoon towards the Tower of Malghera and the city of Venice in the distance. On an island just offshore stands a small church among poplars and stone pines, into which a religious procession is passing. In the foreground are a prominent boat containing three figures, one holding a parasol, and further back a ferry bearing three people, cattle and a dog.

    Critical commentary
To outward appearances this seems to be a pastiche. However, in view of the Booth provenance it may have been repainted at an early date, as W.G. Constable believed - perhaps even by Paul Sandby, its first owner. Numerous versions and variations of the composition indicate its popularity in Wilson's lifetime and later.
