Subject
In the Brussels catalogue the location is said without evidence to be 'La Riccia' (Ariccia). W.G. Constable found this unconvincing and suggested it might stem from a 'superficial resemblance to Wilson's painting of that place.' (cf. P46 and P87).

Critical commentary
P169A has all the appearance of a late variant of P169, with unsure touch in the foliage of the trees and clouds. Discrepancies are also apparent in the relative scale and placing of the figures. The upright format is unusual among Wilson's landscapes, though the size of the canvas is conventional enough.
