Critical commentary
It has been suggested that D372 may be a preparatory drawing for P182 View of the Wilderness in St. James's Park , Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, New Haven. The presence of the artist seated under the tree relates it more closely to P182A View of the Wilderness in St James's Park , Private collection England. In any case the resemblance is generic rather than specific and D373 Study for The Wilderness in St James's Park , The British Museum, is compositionally closer to both paintings.
