Subject
The ancient town of Foligno is in east central Umbria, on the Topino river where it leaves the Apennines and enters the wide plain of the Clitunno river system. It is situated 40 kilometres (25 miles) south-east of Perugia. Loreto is located 127 meters (417 feet) above sea level on the right bank of the Musone river and 22 kilometers (14 miles) south-southeast of Ancona providing good views from the Apennines to the Adriatic.
Critical commentary
Drawn on the spot during Wilson's journey from Venice to Rome in 1751/52. Wilson's title implies that Foligno was reached before Loreto.
