    Critical commentary
The drawing was one of a number in the collections of Wilson's artist-contemporaries, Nathaniel Hone and Paul Sandby, notably D243. The sale of Wilson drawings owned by William Lock 'of Norbury' included twelve 'Small circular Landscapes, Views in the Environs of Rome, taken in the years 1754 and 1756' (Sotheby's, 3 May 1821 (386)), though this drawing is not known to have belonged to Lock.
