Techniques and materials
Michael Liversidge has noted that the abbreviated calligraphic mannerisms Wilson used in this and other drawings made
en route
from Venice to Rome are reminiscent of certain aspects of Canaletto's draughtsmanship in some of his drawings and etchings, but Wilson's handling is less resolved and he uses a different medium. The drawing style also suggests the influence of
Zuccarelli's
Venetian rococo forms.
Subject
Cattolica lies about ten miles south of Rimini on the Adriatic coast of Italy. Already settled in Roman times the town became important as a stopping point for pilgrims travelling from Bologna through Ancona to Rome,
en route
for the sanctuary of Loreto or St Peter's.
Critical commentary
The drawing was one of a number made on the journey from Venice to Rome which Wilson undertook in the company of
William Lock of Norbury
.
