    Description
    A view from the mainland across the lagoon towards the Tower of Malghera and the city of Venice in the distance. On an island just offshore stands a small church among poplars and stone pines. A procession is entering it as two worshippers look on. In the foreground are figures and a prominent covered sandolo.

    L'Anconetta is a small island near Marghera, in the vicinity of Mestre on the Venetian Lagoon, on which stood the convent church of Santa Maria dell'Anconetta - a dependency of the Patriarch of Venice.

    Critical commentary
    Wilson must have seen the island and church during his stay in Venice from October 1750 to July 1751. This painting is one of eight documented versions, of which the prototype is that formerly in the collection of T.W. Bacon. The present version is smaller, proportionally taller and incorporates a slightly wider panorama. It omits the landing stage and boat to the right of the island.

    Condition/Conservation
    According to Drewatts & Bloomsbury 2017: Canvas has been relined. Evidence of old craquelure to the sky. Inspection under UV reveals evidence of retouching to the trees and the water. There are some further scattered patches to the sky. In good restored condition.
