    Critical commentary
David Solkin has commented that if this drawing records an actual place in the Alps, Wilson must have executed it prior to his arrival in Venice in late 1750. However, the composition and to some extent the handling are close to D39 Ponte delle Torri, seen through an Arch, identified in 1981 as a scene near Spoleto. In that case the date of execution would be 1751-52, when Wilson was travelling from Venice to Rome in the company of William Lock, the first owner of the drawing.
