This indispensable dictionary identifies over 6,000 British and Irish travellers, and over 300 artists including Richard Wilson (pp. 1007-8), sculptors and architects who visited Italy in the 18th century. Ingamells gives brief formal biographies, their Italian itineraries and selective accounts of their experiences as described in contemporary sources. The book also contains five useful appendices: Maps, Political Chronology, Italian Rulers, Supplementary Biographical Notes and British and Irish Artists in Italy.
