Description
A view from the mainland across the lagoon towards the Tower of Malghera and the city of Venice in the distance. On an island just offshore stands a small church among poplars and stone pines. A procession is entering it as two worshippers look on. In the foreground are two figures in a boat and further out a prominent covered sandolo sails by.

L'Anconetta is a small island near Marghera, in the vicinity of Mestre on the Venetian Lagoon, on which stood the convent church of Santa Maria dell'Anconetta - a dependency of the Patriarch of Venice.

Critical commentary
Wilson must have seen the island and church during his stay in Venice from October 1750 to July 1751. This painting is one of eight documented versions, of which the prototype is that formerly in the collection of T.W. Bacon (location unknown).

No crossbars to stretcher. Leland Little condition assessment May 2022: Wax lining; minor retouch to sky and minor craquelure retouch visible under UV light; minor rubbing to frame. Conserved 2022 by Simon Folkes.
