Techniques and materials
Light grey oil (?) ground layer. There appears to be a red/brown imprimatura over this, seen on the tacking edges and presumably extending beneath the image. Areas of high impasto, mainly highlights.

Critical commentary
The painting is mainly autograph but there is some studio work, for example in the tree trunks to the left.

Condition/Conservation
Restored by F.W. Colley at St Kilda, 1929. Relined, new stretcher. Some overpaint of the mountain at the left and some damages in the hillside with old repairs. The impasto has been flattened as a result of the relining. Discoloured varnish.
