Description
Three-quarter length portait of Sir Edward Hawke, standing leaning with his left elbow on the base of a broken column, holding a telescope in front of him, left knee bent and advanced, right hand on hip. He is wearing a coat with large decorations around the buttons, open over a silk jacket and a long wig. There are distant ships in the background to the left.

Subject
Edward Hawke (1705-1781) distinguished himself at Toulon and was made Rear Admiral in 1747. In 1757 he commanded the Mediterranean Fleet and defeated the French at Quiberon Bay. In 1765 he became First Lord of the Admiralty. He was raised to the peerage in 1776.
