Subject
The Torre del Fiscale, or Tower of Taxation, a square brick tower, is near Rome by the Via Appia Nuova. It was originally placed at the bend of an aqueduct to strengthen it.

Critical commentary
Perhaps unfinished, as suggested by ambiguities in the lower right area at the base of the arch, which seems structurally at variance with the adjacent boulders. The arch itself seems uncharacteristically two-dimensional.

Condition/Conservation
Dimensions in frame: 44 x 38.2 cm. Kate Lowry has noted: Panel grain vertical to composition. Varnish very discoloured. Under UV no retouches visible over varnish. Part of the tower is unfinished and the stones in lower right corner are unresolved.
