Critical commentary
The composition includes some of Wilson's favourite motifs notably the prominent boulder in the centre (cf. D275 A Great Stone, Italy, National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth) and the fallen tree trunk lower right (cf. D53/73 Studies and Designs done in Rome in the Year 1752, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, p. 73). Wilson's drawings rarely correspond closely to his paintings but the motifs may be found together in e.g. P127 The Lake of Nemi or Speculum Dianae with Dolbadarn Castle, 1763-67, Bristol City Museum and Gallery and P145 The White Monk - II, c.1760-65, The Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation, Houston. The trees seem more British than Italian which could locate the drawing in the years after the artist's return from Italy.
