The article discusses the previously shadowy Hastings's life and significance as a military and gentleman-amateur of the first half of the 19th century in the light of new research. It includes a checklist of his works and reproduces three previously unpublished portraits of him, by William Mineard Bennett (1778-1858), ?Martin Cregan (1788-1870) and Solomon Cole (active 1814-1870s). His links to Wilson as an artist are discussed and his etching after Wilson's The Head of Lake Nemi (E72/30) is reproduced on p. 60.
