Critical commentary
This drawing was thought to be a study for the original Mengs painting (NWP1) but could also be a later copy of it. Roettgen attributed it to Edward Penny (1714-1791), a contemporary of Wilson and Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy (see Bibiliography).
