The book was the result of travels undertaken by Spiker, Librarian of the King of Prussia, in England from September 1815 to November 1816, mainly over the last three months. It was published in English in two volumes, dedicated to 'The Friends of England'.

Vol. 1, p. 314 includes the following description after Spiker's visit to Ince Blundell: 'The room in which we took our wine after dinner, was ornamented with five [actually four] beautiful landscapes, of the celebrated English landscape painter, Wilson, which, during his residence in Italy, he had executed for Mr. Blundell. They are all attached to the wall as decorations, and contain views of the country in the vicinity of Rome, Florence, &c.' [P71A, P119, P127, P142]
