Signature/inscription
Inscribed in the artist's hand at the lower centre: Palada
Subject
If this is intended as Palata, the site is on the eastern coast of Italy in the region of Molise, between Pescara and Foggia and east of Rome. However, Robin Simon has proposed the site as the Rio della Palada on the Giudecca, Venice.
Critical commentary
If Simon's identification is correct the church in the left background could be Sant' Eufemia, although a drawing by Canaletto of c.1730 shows that it then had a taller tower with a spire.
