William Ellis, the son of Joseph Ellis (d. 1793), was a printmaker born in London and apprenticed in 1760 to Joseph Ellis of the Stationers' Company. From about 1770 he was working in William Woollett's studio and in 1778 Ellis was acknowledged jointly with Woollett as the engraver of E44 Solitude.
