William Vaughan was a wealthy North Wales landowner and distant relative of Wilson. A leading figure in the Welsh cultural revival of the mid-18th century, he became M.P. for Merioneth and first President of the Society of Cymmrodorion until his death in 1775. He owned two Wilson paintings P152 Snowdon from Llyn Nantlle, National Museums Liverpool and P154 Pembroke Town and Castle, National Museum Wales; the latter he probably commissioned.
