Thomas Smith, British admiral and colonial governor, was the natural son of Sir Thomas Lyttelton, Bart and half brother of George, 1st Lord Lyttelton (1709-1793). He was a significant early patron of Wilson and commissioned portaits in 1744 (P9 Commodore Thomas Smith, Hagley Hall, Worcestershire) and P9A Admiral Thomas Smith, National Maritime Museum, London. Smith's papers were sold at Sotheby's London, 12 December 1978 (73-79).
