    Description
As indicated in the exhibition catalogue Richard Wilson Themes and Variations at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, 1999 (p.14), the X-ray of the painting reveals that Wilson changed the painting considerably. Originally, there were female figures - possibly from The Destruction of the Children of Niobe , which was painted in 1759, just before Wilson started Solitude.
